The Hawaii Homegrown Food Network, Breadfruit Institute of the National Tropical Botanical Garden and Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden are presenting Hooulu ka Ulu – Celebrating Breadfruit in Hawaii Youth Art Contest.
The contest is part of the educational outreach associated with the Breadfruit Festival Goes Bananas, which will be held Sept. 29 at the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in South Kona. The artwork of first- through third-place winners will be displayed at the festival, and the winners will receive prizes.
The contest is open to all youth artists in first through 12th grades. To qualify, entrants must be full-time residents of Hawaii County and affiliated with a school, home school group or organization. The school or organization needs to prejudge the entries for submission. Each school may submit up to four works of art — one for each division. The divisions are: first through third, fourth through sixth, seventh through ninth and 10th through 12th grades.
The deadline for submissions is Sept. 14. Interested schools should indicate their intent to submit entries by Aug. 9 to Fia Mattice at 896-5122 or matticef@gmail.com.

Aguirre awarded
education scholarship
Western Washington University student Cody Allen Aguirre, son of Gary and Donna Aguirre of Waimea, has received a $1,500 Avis Joanne Stewart Scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year.
The scholarship is awarded to students working toward an education degree through Western’s Woodring College of Education. The student must be in good academic standing.
Aguirre is a sophomore majoring in biology with an emphasis in secondary education. He is a 2010 graduate of Honokaa High School.
N. Kohala youth program receives NOAA funding
Ocean Warriors, the Malama Kai Foundation’s after-school program, was awarded NOAA Bay Watershed Education and Training funding for the 2012-13 school year.
The funding will allow students to enhance their knowledge of watershed science and continue to lead the way in stewarding coastal areas for generations to come.
Coordinated by Elizabeth Pickett and Tom Loomis, Ocean Warriors has enabled students in North Kohala to learn about human and environmental processes along Hawaii’s coasts, and to use this knowledge to protect and preserve key areas through cleanup days, service learning projects and an open space protection effort conducted with multiple community partners.
